In all of my previous jobs, I never had this kind of opportunity. Constant interruptions, whether it be work related or self inflicted by my phone would be ever present.
At the end of the day I’d have completed a high number of tasks but it only really looked good quantitatively. There was no quality. Not to mention a severe lack of fulfilment at the end of the day. I couldn’t understand it for a while, I was getting all these things done but never feeling fulfilled.
I’m glad you mentioned four hours, because that’s exactly what I strive for each day now. I’m finding with four hours of uninterrupted work, the quality improves by an order of magnitude. What’s even more important is the sense of fulfilment at the end of each four hour block.
I almost believe the work day could be shortened to four hours for most people if it didn’t involve any interruptions. It’s amazing what you can do in a state of flow. The hard part is getting there and staying there.
Thank you for the post Jason.
